UPDATE YOUR RESUME-Spring Calendar-Trips-Mentor Sails-Kayaking-Charter Question

January 8, 2012 Captain John Coggin, USCG Master License All Points of Sail and Kayaking, 2517 Nasa Parkway Seabrook, Tx. 77586 Pier 1 West Waterfront

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND FAIR WINDS TO ALL FOR 2012

We are preparing for the next few months as the activity never stops at the School.

WHAT IS HAPPENING:

CORPUS CHRISTI PT ARANSAS TRIP MAY 4 – 8, 2012

We have two spots left for the Corpus Christi Open Gulf sailing set for May 4 – May 8 2012, we are setting this date due to the full moon. We will be leaving Clear Lake early Friday morning and have a Night entry lesson going into Freeport. Saturday another early start for the final leg to Pt Aransas with another night entry into Pt A. This is a great primer for the Harvest Moon race. If you want to save your spot for the Gulf sail let us know, we are about full. This will be the opportunity to partake in open gulf sailing, night sailing, passage making and night entries into other ports.

BELIZE 103/104/105 SPRING BREAK 2012 March 10 – 17, 2012
We have one cabin left for the Spring Break trip to Belize and the 103/104/105 classes. We will be flying Belize City Saturday March 10, 2010 and taking a puddle jumper to San Pedro. The marina is just a short walk over (but we usually take a cab) and board the sloop for the week of sailing and Fun in The Sun. We are SO looking forward to the next Belize trip. It will be a BLASTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT.

Freeport Memorial Day Trip May 26-28, 2010
The annual event is back, we will be leaving Saturday Morning the 26th for the trip to Freeport. The winds should be up and the gulf a great place to be for the trip south. Sunday we will sleep in and enjoy a night sail back to Clear Lake. Traveling up the Ship Channel at night is a TRUE learning experience. This is a journey we always enjoy.

Coastal Navigation January 14 – 15, 2012 (several openings)
ASA 106 Advanced Coastal Cruising January 16-18, 2012 (one opening)
The next classes coming up, not already full, are the Coastal Nav 105 class and the Advanced Coastal Cruising 106. These classes are intended to prepare the student for trips to places never been before, to navigate the trip successfully and to prepare for night sailing and night entry into foreign ports. If you want to join in let us know.

Combo 103/104 – Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Chartering January 27-29 and February 3 – 5, 2012
These two classes are the foundation for chartering worldwide. If you want to jump aboard a 50’ sloop and charter a companies Sloop, this is the class to take. We will be leaving Clear Lake day one and heading to Galveston and open gulf sailing with a trip to Freeport and back. The ICW is also part of the class. This is the next step after BKB 101 and moves the students to living on a Sloop and sailing a 36’ sailboat.

Local Mentor Sails.
Our mentor program is going strong, 52 weeks a year. The mentor sail 1/14/12 is full but we have openings for:
Sunday 1/15/12
Saturday 1/21/12
Sunday 1/22/12
Saturday 1/28/12
Sunday 1/29/12

If you want to join in with the Captains and other members/students this is your chance to add to your resume, be sure to always put your trips in your log book. This gives everyone the opportunity to partake in taking the helm, working the sheets, controlling and docking the sloops. It is a great confidence builder.

Kayaking Tours
The next tours are set for all as follows:
Jarboe Bayou 1/14/12 (Full)
Armand Bayou 1/21/12 (Plenty of openings)
Buffalo Bayou 1/28/12 (Plenty of openings)
Galveston Nature Trails 2/4/12 (Plenty of openings)

Well the last trip to Freeport was a hoot, we left Clear Lake Day one and had a fantastic sail all the way to Freeport, starting the engine for the entry into the Port. It is always a great experience to sail into a new foreign port at night. The 106 class was full and it was well worth it. The log books have been updated and the resumes prepared for the next trip, the control over the sloop was excellent by the students. The sail back to clear lake was just a great, with another night sail up the Houston ship channel and the final leg home to Marker 2. We do enjoy that class.

The kayaking tours have been just as busy with the Jarboe and Buffalo Bayou trips enjoyed by all, and the Armand Bayou Nature paddle just about perfect. It has been a busy fall and approaching winter, DO NOT LET THE SEASON THROW YOU, there is no time better for outdoors than now, from January to May, it is our best kept secret. The winds are up, the air cool, the humidity down and the anchoring great.

We do love this time of year.

SO HOW DO WE FEEL:

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.
--Mark Twain

Was Mark Twain’s raft a vessel?
OK, time for the question of the month, time for the first correct answer to get the January Free Charter:

You have decided to sail to Freeport. You depart Clear Lake arriving at Kemah Marker Two at 8am. There is a five knot current and high tide is at 9am. You calculate you will average 6 knots, what time will you arrive at the ICW.

GOOD LUCK AND START UPDATING YOUR RESUME WITH THE SAILING OUTINGS ABOVE, YOU CAN BE A MARK TWAIN
